These species are known as ecosystem engineers and often create habitats named after them, such as coral reefs, kelp forests, seagrass meadows, and sponge gardens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding the ecology of these habitats is essential, as changes to their structure and functioning can have far-reaching consequences for the ecosystem services that coastal ecosystems provide to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our research focuses on several of these habitats with the aim of advancing our understanding of their biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, while also investigating the impacts of human activities on their structure, resilience, and ecological integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marine coastal ecosystems harbour thousands of species, but some play a particularly important role by shaping their environment in ways that profoundly influence biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
