in seventeenth-century debates about salvation and religious practice. Exploring how the use and definition of the term “disability” functioned to allocate agency and culpability, this study argues that the post-Restoration imperative to capacitate “all men”—not just the “elect”—entailed a conceptual circumscription of disability, one premised on a normative imputation of capability. The work of Richard Baxter, sometimes considered a harbinger of ‘modernity’ and one of the most influential divines of the Long Eighteenth Century, elucidates this multifarious process of enabling. In constructing an ideology of ability that imposed moral self-determination, Baxter encountered a germinal form of the “problem” of disability in liberal theory. While a strategy of “inclusionism” served to assimilate most manifestations of alterity, melancholy presented an intractability that frustrated the logic of rehabilitation in fatal ways.

This title is available as Open Access on <span style="text-decoration: In Andrew McKendry’s Disavowing Disability: Richard Baxter and the Conditions of Salvation, a new work on disability, Calvinism, and seventeenth-century theology in the Cambridge Elements series, I found so much to love. McKendry’s smart, savvy, and surprisingly urgent exploration of the theological workings of salvation (“soteriology”) teaches readers how Richard Baxter’s theology illuminates ongoing crises in exclusionary thinking baked into liberalism and liberal personhood. … McKendry succeeds in making Baxter’s work legible to a range of audiences, including Restoration literary historians, contemporary disability theorists, and even—surprise—queer theorists. … Disavowing Disability is also impressive in its breadth of thinking through multiple forms, shapes, and temporalities of disability. … Given his attention to structures of care and the ethics of normalizing, liberal drives, I think McKendry’s work would illuminate much for both undergraduate and graduate students exploring care networks. I found myself excitedly drafting a special topics seminar syllabus on bioethics of care for nursing and health science students in south Texas (many of whom get into medicine through their faith), and it would be a treat to teach McKendry’s work in that context. Overall, McKendry’s Disavowing Disability is an illuminating project that helps a wide range of scholars recognize and push back against disqualifying frameworks for making liberal personhood—many of which endure in our medical, legal, and educational systems. There is nothing lumbering about the seven tightly organised sections of Disavowing Disability. To this reviewer’s delight, McKendry’s argument is propelled forward at various stages by questions illuminating the significations and contexts of disability with regard to seventeenth-century religious writings, Baxter’s in particular. In the process, not only experienced researchers but also graduate students, and even advanced undergraduate students, are reminded – and taught – how to identify and think through key issues and distinctions. Incisive, erudite, and highly readable, this Element puts scholars of seventeenth-century religious history, disability studies, queer studies, and feminist studies in conversation with one another.
