She goes on to suggest that \u201c[t]he steel shell was built up in Wall Street, the social trimmings were hastily added in Fifth Avenue,\u201d and \u201cthe union between them was as\u00a0<em>monstrous<\/em>\u00a0and factitious\u201d as that \u201cbetween the Blois gargoyles on Peter Van Degen\u2019s [one of the\u00a0<em>nouveau riche<\/em>\u00a0characters\u2019] roof and the skeleton walls supporting them\u201d (52; emphasis added).
