The study is based on survey data from 209 European sports start-ups and examines how different collaboration and open innovation strategies influence companies’ access to resources and funding.

The findings show that the way sports start-ups collaborate with external actors is primarily associated with access to funding, and to a lesser extent with the companies’ business models. The study identifies four different open innovation strategies among the start-ups: market and user-oriented, institutional and corporate, investor-driven, and technology-provider-oriented openness. While funding status varies significantly across the different groups, the results show no corresponding association with company size, growth plans, customer types, or revenue models. The findings suggest that the key question for start-ups is not necessarily how open they should be, but rather who they should collaborate with and for what strategic purpose.

The three finalists were selected based on peer review and evaluation by the conference’s Scientific Committee. As finalists, Canini and Tjønndal will present their research in a dedicated final session at the conference. A jury consisting of members of EASM’s Scientific Committee and the EASM Vice President will then select the winner based on both the submitted paper and the conference presentation.

The 33rd EASM Conference will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 15–19 September 2026.

Daniele Canini and Anne Tjønndal are among three finalists for the Best Conference Paper Award at the 33rd European Association for Sport Management (EASM) Conference.
