swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why This Matters<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cars with <strong>conditional automation<\/strong> (Level 3) can handle most driving tasks, but they still need a human driver to step in when the system reaches its limits. This \u201ctake-over\u201d moment is critical for safety. If the driver reacts too slowly or struggles to regain control, the risk of an accident increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our Study<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with <strong>Politecnico di Torino<\/strong>, we tested <strong>80 drivers<\/strong> in Norway and Italy using high-fidelity driving simulators. We looked at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ramp design:<\/strong> tapered vs. parallel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ramp length:<\/strong> short vs. long<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traffic flow:<\/strong> light vs. heavy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers experienced both <strong>automated mode<\/strong> and <strong>manual driving<\/strong>, while we measured reaction times, acceleration, and eye movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/site.nord.no\/trafikklab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2025\/12\/Simulatori-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/site.nord.no\/trafikklab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2025\/12\/Simulatori-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/site.nord.no\/trafikklab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2025\/12\/Simulatori-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/site.nord.no\/trafikklab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2025\/12\/Simulatori-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/site.nord.no\/trafikklab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2025\/12\/Simulatori.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What We Found<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ramp design matters:<\/strong> Drivers regained control faster on <strong>tapered ramps<\/strong> than on parallel ones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ramp length influences urgency:<\/strong> Longer ramps were linked to slower take-over in merging scenarios.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traffic flow had little direct effect<\/strong> on take-over time, but further analysis is needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cross-country differences:<\/strong> Italian drivers generally took longer to respond and showed bigger changes between manual and automated driving, while Norwegian drivers were more consistent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Experience counts:<\/strong> Driving experience influenced reaction times and acceleration patterns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"480\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 852 \/ 480;\" width=\"852\" autoplay controls loop muted src=\"https:\/\/site.nord.no\/trafikklab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/79\/2025\/12\/Merging-CUT.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Main outcomes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As automated cars become more common, <strong>road design and driver behavior will play a big role in safety<\/strong>. Our findings suggest that adapting infrastructure\u2014or adding smart support systems\u2014could make these transitions safer and easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re continuing to analyze the data, but one thing is clear: <strong>technology and road design must work together<\/strong> to make automated driving safe for everyone.
