Her family heritage ties back to S\u00f8rfold in Nordland county, where her lules\u00e1mi background has shaped both her values and her dreams for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, as region secretary for <strong>Natur og Ungdom<\/strong> and deputy leader of <strong>Oslove Noereh<\/strong>, Ingrid fights for nature, Indigenous rights, and sustainable futures. But her own future \u2014 and where she will live it \u2014 depends on something more than personal commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ingrid dreams of working in marine biology, conducting research that strengthens the Arctic instead of exploiting it. She is clear: she doesn&#8217;t want her work to depend on funding from large oil companies or industrial salmon farming. But today, many research projects rely on just that \u2014 leaving young scientists facing difficult choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" src=\"https:\/\/site.nord.no\/youngarctic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2025\/04\/Tromso.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28\" style=\"width:414px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ingrid Eline Barrab\u00e9s G\u00f8rrissen was in Troms\u00f8 for the Arctic Youth Conference 2025, where this interview took place. Here from Troms\u00f8 harbor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The barriers to staying<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Ingrid and many others, the challenges of building a life in the north go beyond the job market. Weak infrastructure, shrinking healthcare services, and long travel distances make daily life harder, especially outside the main cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When hospitals close, when schools disappear, when the nearest health services are hours away \u2014 it pushes people south, she reflects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It\u2019s not just about having a job. It\u2019s about being able to live a full life.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The current political focus on centralizing jobs and opportunities around Oslo and southern Norway frustrates her. She calls for policies that truly support living across the whole country \u2014 and that recognize Indigenous knowledge in building sustainable Arctic communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fighting for change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ingrid\u2019s heart issues are clear: protecting nature, fighting climate change, and defending Indigenous rights. For her, these struggles are deeply connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have to stop seeing nature only as a resource,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are part of it. And Indigenous perspectives \u2014 how we care for land and water \u2014 offer lessons decision-makers urgently need to hear.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her hope is for a future where young people don\u2019t have to choose between staying in the Arctic and building a meaningful life. Where the Arctic isn\u2019t just a resource frontier, but a living, thriving place for those who call it home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Arctic has so much to offer,&#8221; Ingrid says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We just need the right conditions to make staying possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"4000\" height=\"4000\" src=\"https:\/\/site.nord.no\/youngarctic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2025\/04\/JY1A6764-Enhanced-NR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31\" style=\"width:377px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This interview was conducted by Markus Thonhaugen from the High North Center, Nord University, as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nord.no\/en\/about\/faculties-and-centres\/nord-university-business-school\/centres-and-collaboration\/high-north-center\/projects\/youngarctic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YoungArctic project<\/a> \u2014 an initiative working to make the Arctic a more attractive place for young people to settle, work, and live.
