Much of her childhood was spent outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 I was raised in nature and peace and love. With all the love I could get.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also grew up during a time of visible change and need of constant adaptation to the environment. Her community have had to adapt to the ongoing unstable weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all the communities in Greenland that depend on predicting the changes of the seasons, that shift has brought uncertainty and risks, she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 We can\u2019t rely on weather forecasts anymore. We read the weather ourselves \u2014 but now it comes with worry.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Watch the video interview with Olsen below. That we are the next generation. That we have to take responsibility and be good representatives of our country.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She describes it as both meaningful and demanding. It has shaped her path of life, including her decision making to pursue higher education and get involved in organisational work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 There are good aspects of it. But it also comes with a lot of pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It can be overwhelming, but I\u02bcm willing to take that responsibility for my country.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3867\" height=\"2574\" src=\"https:\/\/site.nord.no\/youngarctic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2025\/05\/iStock-1421332952.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-301\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Colorful houses in Sisimiut, Greenland. Photo: iStock.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A promise to return<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aviaaja is currently studying Sustainable Heritage Management in Aarhus, Denmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But her plan is clear. She wants to return to her community in Sisimiut and work with nurturing local cultural knowledge \u2014 possibly at the museum or within the municipality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 I want to make knowledge systems more accessible. I want to work in ways that help sustain heritage and pass it on to the next generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says people at home are proud of her \u2014 and waiting for her to return. That\u02bcs a promise she intends to keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 A lot of them are waiting for me to come home. That means a lot to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thinking about the next generation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aviaaja is driven by a passion to make things easier for those who come after her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"3644\" height=\"2733\" src=\"https:\/\/site.nord.no\/youngarctic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/95\/2025\/05\/iStock-1421962029.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-302\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sisimiut is the second-largest city in Greenland and is a small town surrounded by high mountains with lots of natural resources. <em>Photo: iStock.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She hopes for the future generations in Greenland to grow up with less societal pressure, and for them to be able to carry on the future of Greenland with more ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 I hope my future children won\u02bct have to bear the generational trauma I was born with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>And I hope they know their mom didn\u02bct stop at any point.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She also hopes for stronger cooperation across the Arctic and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth, she says, need to be included in the discussion. Not just spoken with, but given the chances of being able to make real influence within the Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2013 We are the future.
