TRAFIKKLAB at the Faculty Gathering in Bodø: From Idea to Innovation

At the recent Business School Faculty Gathering in Bodø, TRAFIKKLAB had the privilege of presenting the story behind the creation of our research and teaching laboratory dedicated to traffic studies and driving education. The event, held at Nord University’s Business School, brought together faculty members, researchers, and PhD students to discuss study program quality and strategies for strengthening research activities.

Our contribution was part of the session “Inspiration on the way home – Ideas we had and acted upon”, where we shared how a simple concept evolved into a fully equipped laboratory that now plays a central role in education and research on transport technologies.

From Vision to Reality

The presentation, led by ass. prof. Giuseppe Marinelli, Head of TRAFIKKLAB, traced the journey back to 2009, when the first seeds of the idea were planted. By 2017, the concept had matured into a clear vision: “Let’s build a lab!” However, as with any ambitious project, funding was the key challenge. The turning point came with the successful application for a Research Talent scholarship, which provided the resources needed to transform the vision into reality.

What TRAFIKKLAB Offers

Today, TRAFIKKLAB stands as a hub for technological innovation in transport research and driving education. Our research areas include:

  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and driver behavior
  • Integration of new technologies in driving education
  • Smart road infrastructures
  • Emerging mobility solutions and autonomous vehicles

The lab combines national expertise with global ambitions, positioning Nord University at the forefront of future-oriented research and education.

Engaging the Community

During the gathering, we also invited colleagues to a workshop titled:
“How can we use TRAFIKKLAB in traffic studies? Opportunities, challenges, needs, and concrete scenarios!”
This interactive session sparked valuable discussions on how the lab can support curriculum development and collaborative research.

Looking Ahead

Our participation in Bodø was not just about sharing a success story—it was about inspiring others to turn ideas into action. TRAFIKKLAB is committed to leading innovation in traffic education and research, ensuring that Norwegian expertise continues to make its mark on the global stage.
