Welcome to The 14th annual conference of the Transnational Working Group for the Study of Gender and Sport. The topic of this year’s conference is “Emerging issues and alternative futures for gender and sport”. The conference will be held from November 16-18, 2022, in a physical format at the Nord University campus in Bodø, Norway in cooperation with the Nord University research group RESPONSE – Research Group for Sport and Society.
Sport and gender conference, Bodø
Gender and sport is a wide-ranging theme and this year’s conference is focusing on emerging issues and possible futures for gender and sport. Research on sport and gender has shown a great variety of issues and challenges, but also possibilities. We encourage academics, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss gender and related topics in sport, as well as emerging transformations, difficulties, and potentials. While certain concerns and challenges endure, new and undiscovered phenomena are also reshaping gendered issues in sport in innovative ways. Therefore, we urge conference participants to propose ways to address growing issues and potentials in gender and sport research, policymaking, and practice.
Transnational working group
The Transnational Working Group for the Study of Gender and Sport first met in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2005 and has since organized 13 conferences and annual meetings under the theme of gender and sport. The purpose of the group is to further the study of the issues concerning gender and sport from the cultural, political, educational and social perspectives and to facilitate the transnational and interdisciplinary scholarship in the field. Furthermore, the group places a great emphasis on mentoring young scholars in sport studies.
Nord university is this year’s host
The Nord University Sport and Society Research Group will be the host of this year’s conference. The Sport and Society research group consists of 19 members, working with a wide range of research fields and research questions about sport as a phenomenon and the role of organized sport in society from a multitude of perspectives (e.g. sociological, cultural and historical).
