Come and get something to drink and/or eat and hang out with other attendees and organizers of SAALS 7 the night before the symposium starts! We will be sitting at the high tables close to the bar at Gatsby in the centre of Bodø from 18.00 until around 21.00 Tuesday 3 November, so feel free to join whenever you want.
After the end of the symposium Thursday 5 November, we are planning to book a table somewhere for those who are still around and want to have dinner together. As we will need to know how many to make the booking for, you can either sign up for this at the start of the symposium or via email to saals7@nord.no.
On 4–5 November 2026, the 7th Saami Linguistics Symposium (SAALS 7) will be held at Nord University in Bodø, Norway.
The symposium is the continuation of a series of international symposia previously held in Tromsø 2006 and 2009, in Freiburg 2017, in Uppsala 2019, in Tartu 2022, and in Helsinki 2024. The purpose of the symposium is to give scholars an opportunity to present current research, participate in formal and informal discussions on relevant topics, and explore potential opportunities for future collaborative work. We especially encourage younger researchers at the Master’s and PhD levels to present their work.
The focal theme of the 7th symposium will be Saami language revitalization and education with keynote lectures given by Inga Lill Sigga Mikkelsen (University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway) and Pigga Keskitalo (University of Lapland). Thus, we are particularly inviting papers on these topics, for instance from an educational, sociolinguistic or Indigenous perspective. However, papers related to all aspects of Saami languages and linguistics are warmly welcome.
Proposals for papers must be written in English and may not exceed 2 pages, including references. The papers can be presented in English or any of the Saami languages. However, we ask that either the talk or the slides/handout are in English. Please indicate in your abstract if you would like to give your talk in a Saami language. Each participant can only present one paper and submit one abstract as lead author.
