This research looks at the environmental impacts of maritime transportation and port development in Northern Norway. The risk to marine ecosystems is increasing with increased shipping activity in the Norwegian and Barents Seas.

We will assess the environmental risks and impacts associated with shipping with regard to both accidental and operational discharges to water and emissions to air. We will examine regional systems to manage and mitigate these risks.

We will evaluate how the introduction of new logistic solutions, e.g. green shipping and Green Port/Smart Port, may contribute to reducing environmental risks and provide improved infrastructure for implementing mitigating measures to manually combat incidents such as oil spills.
