Beate has a background in political science and a Ph.D. in social sciences from UiT – the Arctic University of Norway. Her thesis looks at the functions of conferences within Arctic governance. So, she has been to quite a few conferences:
- Plan sessions in advance, seek out (and talk to!) people who might be relevant for your work
- Talk to people from different sectors and affiliations.
- Decide to bring back at least three things from the conference to your work – so that these arenas can have an impact.
Beate is responsible for three courses: a Bachelor’s thesis in IR, a Bachelor’s thesis in Circumpolar studies, and the Norwegian Political Institutions. She also teaches the «text seminars» (EX150S) for the first semester students – which she greatly enjoys! She thinks it is great to meet the students early in their careers and introduce them to academic life.
Beate has a general research interest in regimes, particularly in the Arctic, agenda setting, interstate relations, and security politics. Since working on her Ph.D., she has been interested in Norwegian interests and how Norway works to promote these and advance its position in the Arctic. Also, trying to keep in touch with her «core political science roots,» she has been working on articles with former colleagues at UiT on the impact of social media on the role of local politicians and local political agenda setting.
Beate is currently part of two networks: the UArctic network examining Arctic regional governance challenges and the network on Svalbard geopolitics.

In her free time: Beate likes to run, do yoga, and go on off-the-grid tent-camping trips. In the winter, she likes to cross-country ski.
Fun fact: Beate is “overly preoccupied” with having nice nails (and yes: compliments are welcome!).
