Meet the newest addition to the MINS team at Nord University. Julia Olsen is returning as Associate Professor in environmental sociology. She conducts research on local communities adaptation, Arctic shipping, tourism and marine litter. Julia is also a new coordinator of the Circumpolar and Nordic Studies bachelor’s program https://www.nord.no/…/studi…/bachelor-of-circumpolar-studies
She has a background in the economics of the oil and gas industry and sustainable development. In her Ph.D. in sociology, she examined the consequences of Arctic shipping development on local communities in Northern Russia and Svalbard. Research communication is a part of her work, and she disseminates the results of her research to audiences spanning different generations through presentations at schools, public meetings, and mass media.
In her free time, Julia likes to hike, pick cloudberries, read, bake (and she is doing well in it – other MINS members can confirm), meet friends and colleagues, and learn new things. Recently, she bought a keyboard and downloaded an App to learn to play the piano.
Julia’s favorite color is turquoise, as she perceives it as the color of the Arctic.
