RESPONSE-seminar 26. april – Gender problems in sport. Biology or Gender identity at the Olympics

Dato: onsdag 26. april 2025

Klokka: 09.00-10.00

Sted: Nord universitets møterom i byen – Jakhelln brygge.

The Research Group for Sport and Society (RESPONSE) is hosting a guest lecture with Dr. Piroska Béki.

About the lecture

This lecture explores the distinction between biological sex and social gender, emphasizing their conceptual differences and the evolving discourse surrounding them. While biological sex is anatomically determined, social gender encompasses cultural expectations regarding behavior, identity, and roles. Scholars such as Judith Butler argue that gender is not a fixed biological or cultural entity but a socially constructed phenomenon. The discussion extends to sports, where the traditional binary classification of male and female athletes is increasingly challenged. Key debates include whether biological sex should define sports categories or if gender identity should play a role. The inclusion of transgender and gender-diverse athletes further complicates regulations, raising ethical and practical questions about fairness, identity, and participation in competitive sports.
