Joel Ogwang

Joel is an Ecology and Evolution PhD student at the University of Wyoming where he will be studying the population history of Lates sp. and other pelagic fishes of Lake Tanganyika. He has been working as molecular geneticist at the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank, Entebbe – Uganda, where he worked with Nile tilapia to characterize lake and farmed populations to try and identify signatures for genetic selection for breeding purposes. He previously evaluated the population genetics of fish invasion across the Suez Canal while pursuing an MSc. Biotechnology from the American University in Cairo, Egypt. He is passionate about science outreach and has conducted two trainings for the African Biogenome Project (AfricaBP) East and Central African workshop aimed at building regional capacity in conservation technologies especially Genomics, Bioinformatics, and associated ethical, legal, and social issues.
